February 2026 Chair Letter

February 2026 Chair Letter

As we approach our Legislative Summit—what some associations call a “fly‑in”—the topic of simplifying how we communicate the value of the FTZ program is top of mind. I often catch myself drifting into overly detailed explanations of the program, our challenges, or even our benefits, and I know that can make it difficult to keep an audience engaged. Many of you have probably experienced the same thing… that moment when someone asks what you do at a reception and their eyes glaze over halfway through the answer.

Last spring, in light of the shifting tariff environment and broader national discussions about supply chains and domestic production, the NAFTZ Board voted to engage a public relations firm to help us refine our messaging. Our goal was to make the value of the FTZ program clearer, more accessible, and more broadly understood. Some of you may remember that we introduced the concept of “FTZ Edge” at last September’s annual conference. Based on your feedback, Violet PR has helped us further streamline and strengthen that message.

It’s as simple as ABC—but really, it’s EFG.

The U.S. FTZ Edge (Three Pillars)

1. Efficiency

  • U.S. FTZ procedures simplify customs and logistics – cutting paperwork, clearance times and administrative costs.
  • Companies can shift resources toward innovation and customer value instead of red tape.
  • Approvals can typically be secured in months, yielding efficiencies that last generations.

2. Financial Flexibility

  • Duties and tariffs are deferred until goods enter U.S. commerce, aligning costs with sales and production cycles.
  • Businesses can assemble, test and package products within the zone, keeping inventory agile and cash predictable.
  • These tools help companies reinvest in operations, people and growth – strengthening their U.S. footprint.

3. Global Competitiveness

  • By lowering costs and improving operational agility, U.S. FTZ participation helps U.S.-based producers compete on a more level global playing field.
  • The program helps goods made in America to be more price-competitive, both domestically and abroad, thus growing American jobs and workforce opportunities.
  • From reshoring to expansion, U.S. FTZs supercharge the American manufacturing and trade economies.

We will use this messaging during our visits on the Hill at the end of the month and continue leveraging it moving forward. We also have slightly more detailed versions tailored for Grantees and, separately, for users who may find them helpful when communicating with executives in their organizations. More to come on that soon!
