What does NAFTZ U.S. FTZ Advocacy Look Like in 2025?
With the U.S. election over, NAFTZ has been getting a lot of questions about advocacy efforts in 2025. After every election, there is vagueness around the transition and what will and will not happen in Washington, D.C. And with almost daily announcements about selections for appointments in the incoming administration, delays in determining which party has the majority in the House, and a lame duck session in Congress that is rumored to be working on trade, there is a lot of speculation and not a lot of facts to share.
Even with all of that going on, we know some things for sure:
- The U.S. FTZ program is a pillar of the U.S. economy. U.S. FTZs are a flexible tool that help companies near-shore, re-shore, and make their supply chains more resilient.
- The U.S. FTZ program acts as a buffer in times of trade uncertainty. By deferring duties until they actually enter the U.S. commerce, FTZs offer vital options for storage of purchased goods while companies make the best decisions possible with shifting information.
- Education on the importance of the U.S. FTZ program is critical. As with every post-election transition, it important that we educate the trade community, Congress and the incoming Administration about how changes in trade policy can inadvertently harm companies doing business in the U.S.
